Meaning and history
Hasan is an Arabic name meaning “handsome,” derived from the root حسن (ḥasuna), “to be beautiful” or “to be good.” It was the name of Ali’s son and the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, who Shia Muslims regard as a martyr after he was poisoned by one of his wives. The name was also borne by two kings of Morocco. It is sometimes transcribed as Hassan, though that is a distinct Arabic name.
In 2025, 184 babies were recorded with the name Hasan, ranking #1,145 among boys.
