This name comes from the Old Norse Ívarr, probably formed from the elements ýr, meaning “yew tree” or “bow,” and herr, meaning “army” or “warrior.” It was introduced to Britain in the Middle Ages by Scandinavian settlers and invaders and was later adopted in Ireland as Irish Íomhar, in Scotland as Scottish Gaelic Iomhar, and in Wales as Welsh Ifor.
