Meaning and history
Jasper comes from Latin Gaspar and may ultimately derive from Biblical Hebrew gizbar, meaning "treasurer," itself from Old Persian ganzabarah. Tradition assigns the name to one of the wise men, also called the Magi or three kings, who visited the newborn Jesus. Used occasionally in the English-speaking world since the Middle Ages, Jasper may also be chosen in reference to the gemstone of the same name.
