Joan

Joan is the medieval English form of Johanne and the traditional feminine counterpart of John, ultimately meaning "Yahweh is gracious." It was the usual English feminine form in the Middle Ages before Jane became more common. Its most famous historical bearer is Joan of Arc, the fifteenth-century French military leader and saint. Other notable bearers include singer Joan Baez, writer Joan Didion and actress Joan Collins.

Joan moved from #913 to #987 for boys between 2007 and 2025. That year also produced its highest recorded birth count, at 232.
