Meaning and history

Kalypso is the Greek form of Calypso, from a Greek verb meaning “to conceal” or “to cover.” In Homer’s Odyssey, Calypso is a nymph who keeps Odysseus on her island, Ogygia, for several years before the gods order his release. The name therefore has strong mythological and literary associations. It should be distinguished from the Caribbean music genre calypso, whose etymology is separate. Notable modern exact-spelling bearers are uncommon.
