Kimberly began as an English surname and place name, referring to several locations whose Old English elements are commonly interpreted as a personal name plus “woodland clearing.” The shorter form has developed independent use. The best-known bearer is New Zealand singer-songwriter Kimbra Lee Johnson, professionally known as Kimbra, who gained international recognition through her work with Gotye and her solo recordings.
