Meaning and history
Laila is a form of the Arabic name Layla, meaning "night." The name is central to the medieval Arabic and Persian love story of Layla and Majnun, in which the poet Qays becomes consumed by his love for Layla; this tradition helped carry the name across the Middle East, South Asia and later Europe. It also has a separate Scandinavian use related to a Sami name. Notable bearers include boxer Laila Ali and actress Laila Rouass.
