Meaning and history
Lila has several independent origins. In South Asian use it comes from Sanskrit lila, meaning "play" or "amusement," while in English it is also used as a form related to names such as Lily, Lilah and Leila. This blend of traditions has allowed the same spelling to carry different associations across cultures. Notable bearers include Mexican-American singer Lila Downs and American silent-film actress Lila Lee.
Lila rose from #207 to #187 for girls between 2024 and 2025. Its highest annual birth count came in 2010, with 1,969 births.
