Meaning and history
Maja is a form of Maia used across central, northern and southeastern Europe. Maia comes from Greek for "good mother" or "foster mother" and was the eldest of the Pleiades and mother of Hermes in mythology. In some countries Maja is also a diminutive of Maria. Notable bearers include Norwegian cyclist Maja Włoszczowska and Swedish singer Maja Ivarsson.
In 2025, 40 babies were recorded with the name Maja, ranking #3,712 among girls.
