Meaning and history

Mélanie is the French form of the Latin name Melania, from Greek μέλαινα (melaina) meaning “black” or “dark.” It was the name of a 5th-century Roman saint who gave her wealth to charity, as did her grandmother, who was also a saint of the same name. The name was common in medieval France and was later introduced into England, where it became rare, but interest revived after the character Melanie Wilkes in Gone with the Wind (1936) and its 1939 film adaptation.
