Variant spelling of Melanie, from the Greek melas, "dark" or "black," originally describing dark hair or complexion. The name was carried by the early Christian ascetics Saint Melania the Elder and her granddaughter Saint Melania the Younger, who gave away their considerable wealth to live lives of poverty.
