Meriel is an English feminine form related to Muriel. Muriel derives from the medieval Irish name Muirgel, combining muir, “sea,” with gel, “bright” or “white,” and is conventionally interpreted as “bright sea.” Meriel has also been used independently and may be influenced by Mary in some families. Notable bearers include English actor Meriel Forbes and British writer and illustrator Meriel Tufnell. The spelling should not be confused with the unrelated name Mariel.
