Meaning and history
Muriel is the anglicized form of the Irish Muirgel and Scottish Muireall. A related form was also used in Brittany and was brought to medieval England by Breton settlers after the Norman Conquest. In modern times, the name was popularized by a character in Dinah Craik’s 1856 novel John Halifax, Gentleman.
