Meaning and history
Nadia is the Western European spelling of the Slavic name Nadya, a short form of Nadezhda meaning "hope." It entered French use in the nineteenth century and later spread internationally, receiving particular attention through Romanian gymnast Nadia Comăneci. The same spelling also exists independently in Arabic, where it is related to a word meaning "tender" or "delicate." Other bearers include novelist Nadia Hashimi and activist Nadia Murad.
