Nikita is the Russian and Ukrainian form of the Greek name Niketas, meaning "victor" or "winner," and is traditionally masculine in those cultures. An independently used feminine name with the same spelling also occurs in India, so modern international usage is unisex. Historical and modern bearers include Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev and filmmaker Nikita Mikhalkov, while the 1990 film La Femme Nikita helped establish the name's feminine image in the West.
