The name means “white footprint,” from Welsh ol “footprint, track” and gwen “white, blessed.” In the Welsh tale Culhwch and Olwen, Olwen is a beautiful maiden who loves Culhwch and is the daughter of the giant Yspaddaden, who demands that Culhwch complete several seemingly impossible tasks before consenting to their marriage.
