The biblical name comes from Hebrew Rut, though its exact etymology is uncertain; it is traditionally associated with “friend” or “companion,” but that interpretation is not universally accepted by scholars. In the Book of Ruth, the Moabite widow’s loyalty to Naomi and marriage to Boaz place her in the ancestry of King David.
