Meaning and history
From the Old Testament place name Hebrew שָׁרוֹן (Sharon), meaning “plain,” this name refers to the fertile plain on the central west coast of Israel and also to the biblical “rose of Sharon,” now applied to several different flowers. It has been used as a feminine given name in the English-speaking world since the 1920s, possibly inspired by the heroine of Adela Rogers St. Johns’ serial novel The Skyrocket (1925), and in Hebrew it is unisex.
