Meaning and history
Tara has distinct Irish and South Asian origins. In English and Irish use it comes from the Hill of Tara, the ancient ceremonial seat of the High Kings of Ireland, while the Sanskrit name Tara means "star" and belongs to important figures in Hindu and Buddhist tradition. The name became especially familiar in the United States through Tara, the plantation in Gone with the Wind. Notable bearers include actress Tara Reid and author and meditation teacher Tara Brach.
