Feminine form of the Roman name Tatianus, itself derived from the family name Tatius. It was borne by a 3rd-century saint martyred in Rome under Emperor Alexander Severus and became especially venerated in Orthodox Christianity, which helped make the name common in Russia, where it appears as Татьяна, and in Eastern Europe. It was not regularly used in the English-speaking world until the 1980s.
