Meaning and history

From Θαδδαῖος (Thaddaios), the Greek form of the Aramaic name תַדַּי (Ṯaddai), Thaddeus is possibly derived from Aramaic תַּד (taḏ), meaning “heart” or “breast,” though it may instead be an Aramaic form of a Greek name such as Θεόδωρος. In the Gospel of Matthew, Thaddaeus is named as one of the twelve apostles, while other New Testament passages omit that name and give Jude instead, suggesting the two refer to the same person.
