Meaning and history
Verónica is a Latin alteration of Berenice, with its spelling influenced by the ecclesiastical Latin phrase vera icon, meaning “true image.” It was the name of a legendary saint said to have wiped Jesus’ face with a towel and found his image imprinted on it, and these stories led to occasional use of the name in the Christian world during the Middle Ages. It was also borne by the Italian saint and mystic Veronica Giuliani (1660–1727). In English, the name did not become common until the 19th century, when it was imported from France and Scotland.
