Meaning and history
Alice comes from the Old French name Aalis, a short form of Adelais, itself a short form of the Germanic name Adalheidis (see Adelaide). The name became popular in France and England in the 12th century, remained one of the most common names in England until the 16th century before declining, and was revived in the 19th century. It was also borne by the heroine of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1871).

Alice has risen sharply in the modern US rankings, moving from #422 in 2000 to #65 in 2025. It now stands at #65 for girls. Its highest annual birth count came in 1921, with 11,955 births.
