Meaning and history
Anne is the French form of Anna, ultimately from the Hebrew name Hannah, meaning "grace" or "favour." It reached England in the thirteenth century and became especially popular from the sixteenth century onward. Historical bearers include Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Elizabeth I, and Queen Anne of Great Britain; the name is also closely associated with diarist Anne Frank and the heroine of Anne of Green Gables.
