Nan is an English feminine diminutive, traditionally of Anne or Nancy. Anne ultimately comes from Hebrew Ḥannah, meaning “favour” or “grace.” The form may have developed from affectionate expressions such as “mine Ann,” later redivided as “my Nan,” although the exact pathway is not certain. Nan has also long been used independently. Notable bearers include American author Nan Britton and British actor Nan Marriott-Watson, an established performer in theatre and early film.
