Meaning and history
Nancy was originally a medieval diminutive of Annis, but since the 18th century it has been used as a diminutive of Ann and is now generally treated as an independent name. It became very popular in the United States during the 20th century. A city in the Lorraine region of France also bears the name, though from a different origin. Notable bearers include American first lady Nancy Reagan (1921–2016) and the fictional teen detective Nancy Drew, who first appeared in books beginning in 1930.
