Danya

A Russian Daniel-family short form with other independent cultural uses.

US rank (2025)#4,265

Meaning and history

Danya has several distinct uses. In Russian it is an affectionate form of masculine Daniil or feminine Danila and related Daniel names, ultimately from Hebrew Daniyyel, “God is my judge.” In Hebrew, Danya can be a feminine modern form related to Dan or Daniel, with the same judgment element. The spelling also occurs independently in other communities, where its derivation may differ, so one universal meaning is inappropriate. Russian singer and social-media personality Danya Milokhin is a notable bearer.
