Maia comes from a Greek word meaning "good mother," "foster mother" or "lady." In Greek mythology, Maia is the eldest of the seven Pleiades and the mother of Hermes by Zeus; the Romans also honoured a goddess Maia associated with growth, and the month of May may be connected with her name. Notable modern bearers include actress Maia Mitchell and director Maia Sandu, president of Moldova.
