Maris has several uses. In English it can be a short form of Marissa, while in Estonian it is related to Maria; it also resembles the Latin genitive maris, meaning "of the sea," familiar from the title Stella Maris, "Star of the Sea." Notable bearers include Filipino actress Maris Racal and Latvian ballet dancer Māris Liepa under the accented masculine form.
