Meaning and history
Alise is chiefly a Latvian form of Alice, though the same spelling also occurs elsewhere as a variant of Elise. Latvian Alise ultimately comes through French Alice from the Germanic name Adalheidis, whose elements mean “noble” and “kind” or “type.” When derived from Elise, it belongs instead to the Elizabeth family, meaning “my God is an oath.” A notable bearer is American BMX racer Alise Willoughby, born Alise Post.
