Christina is derived from Christiana, the Latin feminine form of Christian. It was the name of an early, possibly legendary saint who was tormented by her pagan father, as well as a 17th-century Swedish queen and patron of the arts who abdicated to become a Roman Catholic. In the English-speaking world, Christine was more popular for most of the 20th century, though Christina later surpassed it. Notable bearers include actress Christina Ricci (1980-) and singer Christina Aguilera (1980-).
