Nettie is an English diminutive of several names ending in -net or -nette, including Annette, Jeanette, and Henrietta. Those source names have different origins, so Nettie has no single literal meaning: Annette relates to Hebrew “grace,” Jeanette to “Yahweh is gracious,” and Henrietta to Germanic “home ruler.” It also became independent in the nineteenth century. Notable bearers include American geneticist Nettie Stevens and English football organizer Nettie Honeyball.
